Japan Airlines unveils its Doraemon jet at Haneda airport on Sunday. The Boeing 777-300 bears images of characters from the popular animation series Doraemon to mark the 30th anniversary of the first release of a Doraemon movie. The plane will be used from Monday until the end of April, mostly on routes connecting Haneda, Sapporo, Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka and Naha airports.

TAKAMATSU — Passengers aboard a bus managed to avert a major expressway accident here Thursday evening, after the driver passed out.

The Toko Bus Co. vehicle was returning to Takamatsu at around 8:40 p.m. after a sightseeing tour when the driver, 43, suddenly passed out, sending the bus into a sidewall and bouncing off the median divider.

A 37-year-old passenger forced the unconscious driver’s foot onto the brake, while another grabbed the steering wheel, bringing the bus to a halt after about 200 meters.

It was subsequently rear-ended by three other vehicles, leaving one man with minor injuries.

“There were screams inside the bus, and we were frantically trying to stop it before a major accident occurred,” said the passenger who hit the brakes.

The driver remained unconscious when he was taken to hospital but woke up the next morning. Kagawa Prefectural Police’s Expressway Patrol Unit is investigating the cause of the incident.

The bus was hired by a local agricultural cooperative for a sightseeing tour of Iwakuni in Yamaguchi Prefecture and Hiroshima. It left Takamatsu at 6:30 a.m., and was due to return at 9 p.m.

Have anyone thought of crossdressing and go to school as a girl before? Well here’s a story where a boy with gender identity disorder allowed to attend school as girl

SAITAMA — An 8-year-old who was born a biological boy and suffers from mental problems caused by gender identity disorder has attended a public elementary school as a girl since last fall, a local education board in Saitama Prefecture said Friday.

The decision was made to make school life comfortable for the second grader who has had a desire to ‘‘become a girl’’ since kindergarten and begun to feel distress after entering the elementary school at having to stand to use the restroom, officials of the board said.

The school continues to keep him designated as a boy on its register.

There has been a case in Hyogo Prefecture where a boy was accepted to school as a female student. But making such a change while a student is in school is extremely rare in Japan, where schools generally struggle to cope with the agony students face with the disorder.

The boy in Saitama was diagnosed in March last year as having gender identity disorder, a term used to describe people facing a gap between their biological and mental sex identities, and his doctor recommended treating him as a girl so that he can adjust to school life.

After the diagnosis, the school told its students about the boy and the circumstances arising from his problems in September last year when they returned from summer break. His mother also explained the situation to the parents of his classmates and obtained their understanding, the sources said.

OTSU — Local police have taken into custody an elderly woman with dementia and found a total of 70 million yen in a shopping cart she was pushing around, it has been learned.

At around 8 a.m. on Saturday, police in Shiga Prefecture received an emergency call from a passerby saying that an elderly woman was wandering about the streets, investigative sources said. Police then took the woman in her 80s into custody, and found a total of 70 million yen in cash and a significant number of share certificates in her shopping cart.

The woman appears to have carried around her savings whenever she took a stroll. Police officers said she was lucky not to have been the victim of a crime.

At first, the woman reportedly told police that only 10 million yen belonged to her, causing a panic among investigators as to where the rest of the money came from. However, her relatives later confirmed that all the money and stock certificates were her own property.

“She never trusted banks or family,” police quoted her relatives as saying.

The woman has been living alone since her husband died. She apparently started carrying around the money she withdrew from her bank account a few years ago.
